Ryanair expected to launch fresh Aer Lingus bid
28.12.09
Ryanair could be about to mount another bid for rival Irish airline Aer Lingus, as a one-year ban on a takeover attempt expires next month, the Scotsman reports. The budget airline has already mounted two unsuccessful bids.
Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary has said in recent months that Aer Lingus would have to come ‘grovelling’ to him for a bail-out before he would be prepared to bid again. However, the newspaper reports that some analysts have predicted that his decision to pull out of a major contract for new planes with Boeing is a sign that he is confident of being able to take over Aer Lingus and adds that he has been involved in recent discussions on tabling another bid.
Aer Lingus has seen several senior staff depart in recent months after it posted a £72m half-year loss. Meanwhile Ryanair reported a profit of £372m in the six months to 30 September.
