Stansted Airport seeks rail upgrade
28.03.08
Improving the rail links into Stansted Airport is on the agenda for BAA after the company submitted a planning application for a second runway last week. BAA has applied to build a new fourth platform at the airport and a second tunnel alongside the existing rail tunnel into the airport station.
If G2 - the second runway / terminal application that could see the airport expand to 68 million passengers a year, or as big as Heathrow today - is given the green light, the supporting transport system would need to be updated and expanded to cope with increasing passenger demand.
Currently a direct link to London is provided by the Stansted Express with trains departing every 15 minutes with an average journey time of 45 minutes. The train also calls at Bishop's Stortford, Harlow Town and Tottenham Hale, which is ideal for people living nearby who work at the airport and do not wish to drive.
The airport is also connected with Cambridge and Peterborough, which provides other links to Leeds, York, Newcastle and Scotland. All trains have facilities for special needs passengers.
