Ryanair ‘using Euro exchange rate to charge you’
27.06.08
Ryanair is using the euro exchange rate to squeeze extra cash from customers, the Mirror reports. It says that the airline has brought in a new rate that gives them up to a 3.7% hike on ticket prices.
The Mirror says that buyers do not even know they are being charged extra unless they click a button on the page before paying - something most people skip. Even the itinerary which contains all details for passengers flights displays the price before Ryanair's extra cut is taken, it adds.
A flyer from Derry uncovered the 'rip-off' when she realised the amount taken from her credit card account did not match the fee on her Ryanair print-out. She had booked a flight for £355.20 (€452.36) for a family trip from Derry to London. But when she checked her credit card payments the amount taken out was €470.27 - €17.91 more than the Bank of Ireland sterling to euro exchange rate for the same day.
A spokesman for Ryanair told the Mirror the exchange rate used by the airline is provided by an ‘independent financial service organisation’. He said there is a further add-on to allow for ‘fluctuations in the currency markets’.
The spokesman added: ‘All passengers making a payment with a credit card in a different currency than the booking currency are given a currency conversion facility which checks the final amount they pay.’
