Ryanair threaten to close Dusseldorf base
23.04.09
Ryanair has threatened to close its base at Dusseldorf-Weeze Airport in Germany unless a decision to restrict its operating hours is reversed. A spokesman said yesterday that it would terminate flights to and from the airport next week if a court order was not rescinded.
The Ryanair spokesman said the closure of its base would result in the loss of 2500 local jobs and 2.5 million passengers a year to the airport. It has previously carried through on threats to close bases. Last October, it closed its base at Spain's Valencia airport following a row with the regional government.
Ryanair's Deputy chief executive, Michael Cawley, said a deadline of next Wednesday had been set for the court decision to be reversed, adding that it was impossible for the airline to operate its schedule within the new restrictions.
