SSE tells Stansted Airport to ‘wake up and smell the coffee’ on runway plans
21.01.10
Campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) has told Stansted Airport it ‘needs to wake up and smell the coffee’ and axe its plans for a second runway. SSE make the comment after the latest figures show the number of passengers at Stansted declined by 2.6 percent last month and by 10.7 percent in 2009.
SSE campaign director Carol Barbone said there was no commercial logic in proceeding with a second runway. She said: ‘Stansted needs to wake up and smell the coffee. It needs to acknowledge the reasons why Stansted has experienced such a dramatic reversal during the difficult economic climate of the past two years, in stark contrast to Heathrow.’
However, a spokeswoman for BAA, said: ‘I don’t know about smelling the coffee, the adverse weather seems to have played havoc with the SSE messaging machine as it appears to be stuck in time and on the same old point.’ She said last year’s decline in passenger numbers was down to the global recession.
