Leisure passengers at Stansted have the lowest annual income of the major London airport users, while Heathrow’s business travellers have the highest, new figures from a major CAA survey reveal. Those on holiday flights leaving from Stansted last year had an average annual income of £44,923, while the average for business passengers leaving Heathrow was £79,335.
The statistics came in a survey of 200,000 departing passengers in 2009. It revealled Heathrow had the highest proportion of London’s passengers travelling alone (64.7%), while Gatwick had the fewest at 40.9%. Gatwick also had the highest proportion of passengers travelling in groups of 5 or more people at 3.3%.
Heathrow had a greater proportion of travellers taking trips lasting more than four weeks, at 7.6%, while Luton saw the lowest proportion, at 1.5%. The largest UK passenger family sizes were found at Gatwick, where 7.3% of respondents had families with five or more, whereas at Heathrow, 29.3% were travelling alone. Luton had the highest proportion of flyers over the age of 74, at 1.9%.
At 40.3%, Heathrow had the highest proportion of leisure passengers in the highest A/B socioeconomic group, while Gatwick had the lowest at 34.7%. Stansted had the most users of public transport at 47.3%, while Luton had the least, at 31.0%.
