A 50-year-old man from Essex who operated a lost property office hat Stansted Airport as been cleared of stealing items left behind by passengers. Simon Hepper, from Dunmow, Essex, was accused of pocketing wallets, bags, mobile phones, iPods and a camera.
A two week trial at Chelmsford Crown Court heard that items left on Ryanair and easyJet flights into Stansted were handed over to Mr Hepper's firm, Heppair Services, which ran the lost property service at the airport. Some items were returned but the prosecution claimed others were not.
Police became suspicious and the court was told that officers planted a wallet on a plane, reported it lost and then found it at Mr Hepper's home. It was claimed that Mr Hepper stole 14 wallets, 11 mobile phones, two iPods, a BlackBerry, a camera, a purse and a business card holder. He had denied all offences.
Mr Hepper was found not guilty yesterday of 33 counts of theft between November 2005 and June 2006 at the airport.
