SSE launch fifth appeal against Stansted expansion
17.06.09
A fifth appeal against plans to increase passenger numbers at Stansted Airport has been launched by campaigners, the Gazette reports. Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) members will orally present their application to a High Court judge tomorrow over the decision to allow Stansted to cater for 35 million passengers a year, up from 25 million, using the current single runway. The latest appeal has been dismissed by BAA, which claimed the group had had ‘more appeals than Blue Peter’.
Peter Sanders, SSE chairman, told the newspaper: ‘An extra 10 million passengers a year would be equivalent to adding the entire annual throughput of Birmingham or Luton airport on top of what we already have at Stansted. The environmental impact of that would be very serious in itself. However, this application to the Court of Appeal is also part of our wider strategy to make it as difficult as possible for BAA to push forward its expansion plans by fighting them every step of the way.’ SSE has already said it will consider applying to the House of Lords for an appeal if this application is not successful.
But a spokesman for BAA Stansted said: ‘Frankly, at this point they've had more appeals than Blue Peter. The judgments made so far have been very, very clear. The judge who ruled in the High Court Appeal, following the rejections from both the Inspectorate and the Secretary of State, said SSE's appeal was unjustified and without substance.’
