Facial recognition tests at 10 UK airports
17.06.09
Trials of facial recognition immigration gates already taking place at Stansted and Manchester airports are to be extended to 10 UK hubs in the next two months. The system is designed to reduce queues while improving border control. It can be used by any British or European passenger who has an e-passport containing an electronic strip.
The scanners measure points on a person’s face and compare them to a stored image on the e-passport. However, passengers whose appearance changes after having their passport photo taken need not worry. The gates also help with immigration security checklists and highlight evidence of passport tampering. Some passengers are still subject to a random check and immigration officers monitor the gates.
