Councils slam Stansted runway plan
16.03.08
Six councils representing 3.2 million people have joined forces to oppose plans to double the size of Stansted Airport. Councils in Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordshire said today that they will 'vigorously campaign' to stop a second runway being built and have formed a cross-party group called 'Councils Opposing a 2nd Runway' (or CO2) to call on the Government to re-think its aviation strategy.
Airport owner BAA announced its latest expansion plans for the airport last week, submitting four planning applications for a new runway, terminal and related infrastructure. Campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion said the proposals were 'tantamount to a declaration of war on the local community and global environment.'
Now the group of local authorities - Essex County Council, Hertfordshire County Council, Suffolk County Council, Braintree District Council, East Herts District Council and Uttlesford District Council - have also voiced their opposition, saying that a second runway would put 'unbearable strain' on local services.
Essex County Council leader Lord Hanningfield said: 'CO2 will be a powerful force that will campaign on behalf of local residents to oppose this unwanted and unnecessary runway and will take the fight directly to BAA and the government.'
