170 jobs go at Stansted
15.05.09
As the recession bites at Stansted Airport, 170 jobs have been lost the Herts & essex Observer reports. TNT Worldwide Express confirmed 91 posts are on the line as the company seeks to centralise its aircraft maintenance team at its main hub in Liege, Belgium. And at SR Technics, an aircraft maintenance specialist, 80 employees face redundancy, while 19 others could be transferred to Zurich.
A spokesman for TNT told the newspaper: ‘The engineering facility at Stansted provides support and technical advice to TNT Airways’ European fleet, but the function will switch to Belgium in 2010. This will impact on 91 employees at Stansted, but the company is hopeful that a significant number of those involved will be offered alternative employment within the company.’ He stressed that TNT’s UK parcel express business base at the airport was unaffected.
A spokeswoman for SR Technics said the job losses were necessary to secure the firm’s future. She said: ‘We are still in the process of our consultations and therefore cannot disclose the total number of affected employees that will be leaving the business. We’re fully aware of the difficult economic and labour market and appreciate the personal implications of our proposals on our employees.’
