Stansted Airport was Europe's biggest low cost airport last year. It offered the most low-cost flight departing capacity in 2007 - with 14.5 million seats, up 2.4% on the year before - according to the 2008 edition of RDC Aviation's Low Cost Monitor.
European low-cost carrier (LCC) seat capacity grew 22% in 2007 compared to 2006, and LCCs accounted for 35% of all intra-European capacity last year, up from 31% two years ago. RDC estimates that by 2012, LCCs will account for ‘approximately 50%’ of an estimated 1 billion intra-European seats on offer.
Number of routes operated by LCCs increased 28.9% to 2,999 while the number of airports served rose by 6 to 287. In comparison, 466 airports received service from conventional airlines, down from 477 in 2006.
The three largest LCCs, Ryanair, easyJet and airberlin, accounted for a combined 50% of European LCC capacity, down from 51% in 2006. The UK still offers the most LCC capacity, but Spain experienced the largest growth, rising to the number two position in Europe, as Germany dropped to third.
