New Stansted – US flights take off
12.06.10
US low-cost carrier Sun Country Airlines has launched flights connecting Minneapolis with Stansted Airport. Flight SY47 departed Sun Country's Minneapolis base at 16:40 yesterday afternoon local time. The flight will depart Minneapolis on Fridays and return from Stansted on Sundays, so the same crew can fly in both directions.
The route is operating as a seasonal scheduled service for the next 10 weeks, using a Boeing 737-800 more often used by the likes of Ryanair to fly short haul services. Because the aircraft does not have the range to complete the flight non-stop, it will have an hour-long stop in Gander, Newfoundland. Including the stop, it will take nine hours, as opposed to eight hours and 20 minutes on Delta's non-stop flights from Minneapolis to Heathrow.
The summer service marks the return of US flights for Stansted, which at one point in 2007 had three US carriers - American Airlines and all-premium operators Eos and Maxjet. But Maxjet ceased operations at the end of 2007, Eos shut down in April 2008 and American dropped its short-lived New York JFK - Stansted route in mid 2008.
