gloomy november helps baa passenger numbers
11.12.04
British tourists seeking a break from this winters gloomy weather helped airport operator BAA's November pasenger numbers increase. BAA saw 10.2 passengers pass through its UK airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, up 3% on 2003.
The Scots lead the exodus, with almost 11% more passengers passing through Aberdeen airport than a year earlier. Passenger numbers at Stansted airport were up 4.2%, slower than in previous months as Ryanair transfered some of its routes to Luton at the start of the winter schedule, in respose to its ongoing dispute with BAA at the airport.
Passenger numbers at heathrow airport were up a modest 1.2%, as US Precidential elections and the thanksgiving holiday plus cuts in BA's schedule all depressed passenger numbers.
Although traffic from north America was down at all 7 or BAA's UK airports, overall long haul traffic at the airports was up by almost 10%. Charter traffic fell by 13.4% in the month, as a result of cuts in capacity by tour operators for this winter season.
