Biomass boiler cuts Stansted gas consumption
10.04.09
The use of alternative fuels allowed Stansted Airport to cut its gas consumption by 40% on what turned out as being one of the coldest winters in 13 years. A spokesman for the airport said that the efficiency of the biomass boiler, that burns wood chips, surprised everyone.
The boiler is part of the £50 million renovation project at the airport, which was completed in 2008. It is one of the largest biomass boilers for commercial use in the UK. To function the boiler uses 2,500 tons of wood chips each year. BAA says that this comes from sources certified by the Forestry Committee. And its performance was so good that it is now the main heating system of the entire airport.
Andy Jefferson, head of the environmental office of Stansted Airport, said: ‘To say we’re delighted with the performance of the new biomass boiler would be an understatement. The introduction of biomass technology has by far been the largest contributor in the reduction of power costs.'
