A Latvian man convicted in Sweden of going on a drunken rampage on a Ryanair plane has successfully appealed his jail sentence down to a fine. The 33-year-old man, who has an address in Ireland, was flying from Stansted to Latvia with the budget airline during the summer when he triggered an emergency landing in Sweden with drunken actions, including threatening a female passenger and attempting to open a cabin door.
Gothenburg District Court sentenced the man to eight months imprisonment in October after he was convicted of violent resistance but cleared of an air traffic sabotage charge. However, the Court of Appeals reduced the sentence to a $500 fine, The Local reports
The man told the district court he suffers from a fear of flying and had consumed beer before boarding the flight, continuing to drink from a bottle of vodka. The man said he had only hazy memories of the incident.
