Stansted campaigners plan wood tidy
09.10.09
Stansted Airport campaigners will be busily tidying up a specially created wood this weekend. Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) is inviting members and the public to come down to see how its wood in Broxted is growing and to spruce it up before the winter season arrives.
SSE campaigns director, Carol Barbone, said: ‘The wood was created in 2004 to reflect the determination and resolve of SSE supporters who planted it as a symbol of our hope that this community's children - like the trees within the wood - will flourish and reach maturity in this community rather than be uprooted from their homes to make way for an expanded Stansted Airport.'
‘If anyone has a petrol strimmer and is able to bring it with them to use, please bring it. Otherwise, come armed with gloves, for pulling errant weeds from inside the tree protectors or, if you have them, your own hand tools for cutting back grasses and weeds close to the tree trunks. Stout shoes or boots are also a good idea.’
The big clean up starts at 14:00 on Sunday. If the weather is dry parking will be in the field in front of the wood or, if wet, by the farm on the hard standing.
The SSE Wood is on Broxted Hill Farm at Broxted Hill, Broxted CM6 2EP (close to Great Easton). Organisers will be serving cakes and squash to helpers so would like to know if you plan to attend. Please e-mail info@stopstanstedexpansion.com or call 01279 870 558.
