Ryanair criticised over cost saving poll choices

Ryanair has been criticised by passenger groups after appearing to suggest that overweight customers should pay more for their flights, the Herald reports. The proposal was one of five suggestions selected by the airline from an online poll on ways of saving costs.
Other cost saving suggestions selected included a £2 ‘corkage’ fee for passengers who bring their own food and a £3 charge to smoke in a converted toilet. The most popular suggestion was a £1 fee for toilet paper, with a picture of Michael O'Leary, the head of the airline, printed on it. While not directly endorsing the ‘top five’ suggestions, a Ryanair spokesman said yesterday it was looking at ways to bring down costs.
However, a spokesman for the Air Transport Users Council told the newspaper: ‘We would be concerned if Ryanair wanted to charge more to passengers who are overweight. We don't think they will do that but, whether the proposals are serious or not, the airline should consider the risk of alienating its passengers with this kind of publicity.’
Ryanair said it has received more than 12,000 suggestions from passengers as part of its competition, which has a £1000 prize for the winning entry, and would now conduct an online poll to vote for the winner.
