EU says 1 in 3 flight websites mislead consumers
08.05.08
An EU review of airline and other travel websites has found that one in three are misleading consumers by concealing the true cost of flights until consumers are close to booking. The EU's executive office says an investigation found there were ‘serious and persistent consumer problems’ with online flights sales in Europe.
The review was supervised by Meglena Kuneva, the EU's consumer protection commissioner, and was released today. It focused on how the websites offered flights, under what conditions and at what prices.
Regulators say 137 of 386 Web sites checked - or one in three - violated EU consumer laws, including dozens of well-known travel operators, budget airlines and national carriers. Ms Kuneva said consumers are being misled and she threatened new measures against the industry if the abuses continue.
