Pro and anti-Stansted campaigners at party conferences
07.10.09
Stansted Airport bosses and anti-expansion activists have taken their battle to the Conservative Party Conference, the Herts Observer reports. Both groups are lobbying hard at the Manchester summit to convince politicians to back their cause as the country prepares for a General Election, and campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) was at the Labour party conference too.
SSE’s message is: ‘If you want to support the UK economy - Stop Stansted Expansion!’ Campaign director Carol Barbone and her team have been focusing on their view that cheap flights generate jobs and investment overseas at the expense of the domestic UK economy. They have handed out 1,000 leaflets both this week and last – at the Labour conference - to cabinet ministers, shadow ministers and other leading politicians and national journalists and broadcasters.
However, an alternative message is being delivered by Stansted’s head of communications Ashley Riley. The newspaper reports that he wrote from Manchester: ‘There is lots of talk here about the General Election next year and what that would mean for the UK. That is why we are here. It is fundamental that the voice of business, big and small, is heard this week. It is fundamental to our futures that any new Government introduces policies that support industry, as we come out of the recession.'
‘We will be talking to the Conservatives about aviation and about Stansted, and ensuring that our 12,000-strong workforce in 180 on-airport companies have their voices heard.'
