Man fined for Stansted theft

A man who stole almost £1000 from his employer will have to pay almost £2000 and do community service after pleading guilty to theft.
Peter Shellard, 46, of The Green, Cheshunt was a supervisor of drivers working for easyBus at Stansted Airport when he took £611 that was due to be banked on July 3 last year. He also took a driver's float of £200 and made £120 by using false tickets to claim car parking expenses.
The court heard that he stole the money after falling behind with his rent and bills while he was out of work for eight months. He had been served with an eviction order two days before the crime happened.
Mr Shellard pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and another offence of making a false representation in respect of car parking expenses. He was ordered to pay £931 in compensation, £1000 in prosecution costs, complete 140 hours of unpaid community work and attend a Think First programme.
Judge Christopher Ball QC told Mr Shellard, who had previous convictions for theft and deception: ‘You are someone who has a dishonest streak in you. Because of your miserable record of dishonesty, you deserve to go inside. But because of your guilty pleas and the fact I am told you are making inroads into your debts and sorting yourself out, I won't send you to prison.’
