Airport retail sales soar on weak pound
01.03.10
The weak pound saw sales at London’s Heathrow and Stansted Airport jump to to their highest levels for a decade last year, despite a fall in passenger numbers. The airports generated its highest level of income from retailing since duty-free for European travellers was abolished in 1999.
Although passenger numbers at both airports fell - at Stansted by a massive 11 percent - in 2009, a surge in sales has been driven by the falling value of sterling, which made goods comparatively cheap for foreigners passing through the airports. Increased security measures are also seeing passengers arrive at the airport earlier, increasing shopping and eating time.
