Southend Airport expansion plans submitted

More than 6700 jobs could be created if plans to expand Southend Airport are agreed. That was the message from airport bosses as they submitted a planning application this week to extend the runway from 1605 metres to 1905, which will allow larger planes to carry business and leisure passengers to destinations all over Europe.
If approved by Southend Council, the new runway could be operational by 2011, and Alistair Welch, the airport’s managing director, said it could mean that 2,520 people would be working at the airport by 2020. He said: ‘The development of the airport will transform the economic prospects for Southend, introducing to the economy a stimulus and source of growth and job opportunities.’
The plan seeks permission for an extension of the runway, the building of a new terminal and diversion of Eastwoodbury Lane. The overall project is expected to cost in the region of £30-40million and the airport is planned to be complete by May 2011 – in time for the 2012 London Olympics. Night flights going in and out of Southend will be reduced – if plans to extend the airport’s runway are agreed.
Southend Council is expected to discuss the plans in the next 16 weeks.
