An unexploded 1960s mortar discovered near a beach and blown up by bomb disposals experts did not contain explosives but was full of concrete. The bomb scare hit flights at nearby Southampton airport, closing it for several hours.
An area near Weston Shore in Southampton was cordoned off on Tuesday afternoon after the device was found. Yesterday afternoon, experts floated the device and sunk it offshore before blowing it up.
Five hundred homes had to be evacuated and flights coming into Southampton airport were cancelled. Ferries and boats were also held up in the Solent while the controlled explosion was carried out.
