Southampton Airport plan noise monitoring stations
22.06.09
Planes that stray off their flight path will be tracked for the first time by Southampton airport. The airport is proposing to install a new system to track aircraft at low levels to within five metres. Noise campaigners hope it will allow airport bosses to hold airlines to account for specific noise complaints when planes drift off agreed courses.
The proposal is part of a statutory five-year noise action plan proposed by the airport to minimise the disturbance planes cause to nearby households. Two new mobile noise monitoring aerials will give a real picture of noise around the airport by next year. At present, data on the type, performance and routes of aircraft using the airport is fed into a computer which produces maps showing average noise levels.
