New Terminal Proposed for Southampton Airport

A new terminal could be built at Southampton Airport to cope with the increasing passenger demand. The idea is part of a draft plan released by the airport's owner, BAA, as part of an outline strategy for the next 25 years.
The strategy document predicts that passenger numbers will rise from the current 1.5 million to 6 million by 2030, and in the process more than 4,000 jobs will be created. June passenger numbers released by BAA last week (see this earlier airport news story) revealed that Southampton airport had the biggest rise in traffic for BAA's airports, adding 31.7%.
However concerns about the airports growth have been raised by the council, which said the expansion could cause congestion, pollution and noise. Councillor Tim Knight, said: 'We welcome the fact that the airport is consulting local people on its plans for growth. It's a valuable asset and helps to boost the local economy, and it's good to have an international airport so close to home.
'However, airport growth can also add to problems of congestion, air pollution and noise for residents, and we must take into account too the impact on transport links and employment growth,' Knight added.
David Cumming, managing director at Southampton Airport, said: 'Over the next 25 years we will continue to support the growing commercial, leisure and cultural success of the region in a responsible and sustainable way. Our intention is to remain a regional airport, rather than to grow to the size of airports such as Heathrow or Gatwick. As we grow, we aim to build upon our reputation as one of Europe's leading regional airports.'
