Southampton Airport firefighters complete charity climbs
17.07.09
A team of eight Fire Fighters from Southampton Airport have climbed Ben Nevis, Scafel Pike and Snowdon in a record 17 hours and 10 minutes, as part of the Three Peaks Challenge. The challenge involves completing the three mountain climbs and travelling between the locations, all within 24 hours, to raise money for charity. The airport firefighters received a platinum medal for their efforts, coming in 11th out of 112 teams.
Teams receive a bronze award for completing the challenge in under 24 hours, a silver award for completion in under 22 hours, a gold award for completion in under 20 hours, and a platinum award for completion in under 17.5 hours. The Southampton Fire Fighters' time steals the BAA wide title from the Gatwick Airport team, who completed the challenge in 2005 taking just 14 minutes longer.
The team also raised around £1,000 for The Burns Unit at Salisbury Hospital, and The Fire Fighter’s Charity through sponsorship, and collections at Sainsbury’s in Hedge End and Shirley, ASDA in Southampton and Totton, and Haskins.
