Campaigners call on Southampton Airport to soundproof 12,000 homes
16.12.09
Campaigners have called for Southampton Airport to soundproof the homes of almost 12,000 Hampshire residents, the Southern Echo reports. They say noisy aircraft landing and taking off at the airport could affect the health of residents living nearby. Environmental Protection UK also wants seven local schools under the flight path to be provided with sound proof glazing.
London City, Manchester, Liverpool, Robin Hood, Birmingham, Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted airports all offer their neighbours insulation grants. Since 1978, Birmingham International Airport has spent £12m on soundproofing more than 7,000 nearby properties. However, under a recent scheme launched by Glasgow Airport only two homes qualified.
Southampton Airport bosses say they do not need to offer sound insulation as its aircraft noise does not exceed the Government’s threshold. Environmental Protection UK wants this threshold to be voluntarily lowered by the airport.
