Southampton Airport 'key part' of city's success

Southampton Airport has played a 'key role' in the city being voted the sixth best location in the UK for international transport links, according to airport operator BAA. The 2007 Cushman & Wakefield UK Cities Monitor report named Southampton one of the UK's major international travel hubs.
Research was carried out among senior executives from the top 200 companies around the UK, examining the key issues that are taken into account when firms consider where to locate their business. The report noted that Southampton Airport, with its close links to both rail and motorway networks, coupled with Southampton Container Port, was continuing to attract strong growth.
London was the number one commercial destination, followed by Manchester and Birmingham, with Glasgow and Bristol making up the top five. Southampton came in at number six, ahead of Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool, Belfast and Cardiff.
Fourteen airlines serve 47 destinations around the UK and Europe from the south coast hub, including important business centres like Frankfurt and Dusseldorf in Germany, Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam and Brussels.
Chris Butler, its managing director, said: 'The report highlights that cities are increasingly in competition with each other to attract inward investment. Naturally an international airport plays a key role in this.'
