Emergency landing at Southampton Airport
05.02.08
A single-engine light aircraft with two people on board has made an emergency landing at Southampton Airport yesterday after losing power. The plane, which was en route from Exeter to Germany, suffered a 'loss of engine', a spokeswoman for the airport said.
The plane landed safely and no one was hurt, according to a spokeswoman for the airport. An eye-witness, Gary Smith, told the BBC that the plane appeared to have no lights on. He said about six fire engines and several police cars arrived at the airport and quickly positioned themselves at its 'top side'.
He told the BBC: 'There were also two airport fire engines near the landing strip ready to go. From nowhere a plane emerged, normally you would see it from a distance, but it had no lights. It just emerged out of the grey. It was swaying and you couldn't tell whether it was coming in under power or not.'
Emergency services were called as a precaution but were not needed, the spokeswoman for Southampton Airport said.
