04.11.05
Eastern Airways introduced its first international flight today when it began its Southampton airport - Brussels service. Eastern succeeds VLM Airlines on the route, offering improved timings with two flights each weekday.
Having built up a strong domestic network from its Humberside Airport base over the last eight years, it has taken a step up and is taking over a Southampton-to-Brussels route, with the first flight leaving Hampshire at 07:10am for the European Union capital. The flight is 253 miles, similar to the airlines regular Humberside to Aberdeen route.
Eastern will base one plane at Southampton, enabling the airline to depart from the airport at 07:10a and 17:50, arriving in Brussels at 09:30 and 20:10 local time. Return services will depart Brussels at 10:10 and 20:40, landing in Southampton at 10:30 and 21:00 local time.
A spokesman for the company said: 'We are always looking for new opportunities which are commercially viable and markets to enter, and the start of the Southampton-to-Brussels service shows the airline is taking a new step forward in route targeting.' Last Monday, Eastern launched a three times a day weekday service from Durham Tees Valley Airport to Bristol, and more international routes could follow.
Eastern Airways operates 750 flights each week and will carry approximately 500,000 passengers this year on a network taking in Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Durham Tees Valley, Edinburgh, Humberside, Inverness, Isle of Man, Leeds Bradford, London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham East Midlands, Southampton, Stornoway and Wick.
