Southampton Airport to celebrate Spitfire 70th anniversary

Plans are underway at Southampton Airport to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first flight of the Spitfire. A re-enactment of the Spitfire's very first flight will take place at the airport at 16:30 on Sunday 5 March, exactly 70 years after the original flight took place.
A formation of five spitfires will be performing a flypast after the re-enactment, which can be viewed from Mayflower Park in Southampton on Sunday 5 March between 16.30 and 16:45. The Itchen Valley Country Park, Eastleigh, is also expected to be an excellent vantage point.
Chris Butler, Managing Director of Southampton Airport said, 'We are very proud of our association with the Spitfire here at Southampton Airport. It holds great significance for local people, being a national icon that was designed, built and tested in this region. I feel the wide range of activities celebrating the launch are a fitting tribute to this great British aircraft and all who were involved with its design, manufacture and flight.'
