Robin Hood Airport rail station plan moves forward
27.06.08
Doncaster Council's planning committee have given Robin Hood Airport the green light for a new rail station at the complex. The station scheme, which still needs to clear several planning hurdles, would be located on the Doncaster to Lincoln line a few hundred metres from the airport terminal.
The station would be two platforms - a change from the original proposal for a single platform, which proved too expensive in signalling costs. A 250- space park and ride is part of the initial design, with a shuttle service between the station and the terminal building.
Clare Wilson, the airport's environment manager, said: ‘We are delighted with the news that this important new facility is nearer to reality. Seven percent of our passengers already use public transport, which is really positive when you consider that the airport has only been open for three years.’
‘We are confident that this future enhancement will help us increase public transport usage further and improve access for our passengers across the region.’ She said the next stage of the project involved detailed rail investigations.
Details still have to be agreed with Network Rail and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, including signalling and operating arrangements.
