Robin Hood Airport expects horse race boost

Robin Hood Airport expects an influx of private jets and a big boost to business during this year's Ladbrokes St Leger festival, the Doncaster Free Press reports.
Thousands of racing fans will converge on Doncaster between September 10 and 13 for the four-day spectacular at Town Moor. As well as welcoming high numbers of Irish visitors on existing scheduled flights, the airport will play host to racing professionals flying in on private aircraft.
Managers are hoping to build on a 73 percent increase in aircraft activity recorded last year. Airport director Mike Morton told the newspaper: ‘The St Leger is a great occasion for Doncaster, Yorkshire and the whole horse racing fraternity in the UK and Ireland, and it means we are significantly busier at this time of year.'
‘The regular business flights from Dublin and Belfast will be packed out with horse racing enthusiasts so we are prepared for a swell in numbers from our two key Irish routes. But our biggest movement is a huge increase in general aviation, which last year was up 73 percent for the St Leger. This is typically private jets bringing jockeys, owners and trainers to Doncaster.’
The airport is also likely to be involved in the transportation of some racehorses to the Leger - the second held since Doncaster racecourse underwent a £32 million revamp last year. However Mr Morton said arrangements around the movement of animals were usually left until closer to the meeting itself.
