Robin Hood Airport celebrated the arrival of the largest jet plane to ever use the airport yesterday. The giant Antonov plane was loaded with a gigantic 65-tonne oil well cap which is known as a Christmas tree by oil workers.
The Ukranian built Antonov An-124-100 is famous in the aviation industry for setting 30 world records, including lifting 171 tonnes of cargo to a height of 10,750 metres. The cargo, which is being carried by Volga-Dnepr airlines, is eventually bound for Houston, Texas, to be used in oil fields there.
Stuart Sinclair, group airfreight development manager for Peel Airports, said: 'Ad-hoc flying like this demonstrates how Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield is quickly becoming a serious contender in the competitive air freight market and specialist heavy-lift sector.'
