Strike at Robin Hood Airport
18.10.08
Workers at Robin Hood Airport went on strike yesterday in a row over pay. Baggage handlers started a 24 hour walkout at midnight after failing to agree terms on overtime pay. Staff want overtime pay when they work longer than their 37.5 hour weekly contract. However, their employer, ground services firm Servisair, will only pay overtime after 45 hours.
Union bosses said 20 members from the Transport & General Workers sector of Unite were striking. John Evans regional industrial organiser said he expected flight delays especially during the afternoon when the airport was busier, however, both the airport and Servisair said flights would not be delayed.
A Servisair spokesman said that check in staff had already accepted the offer, which would not be improved. A further 24 hours walkout is scheduled to begin at midnight tomorrow (Sunday).
