Robin Hood Airport passengers down 30%

Passenger numbers at Robin Hood Airport are plunging and it is on course for its worst year since it opened in 2005, the Star reports. Figures just released by the Civil Aviation Authority show that just 99,000 people flew from Robin Hood Airport last month, compared to more than 130,000 at its peak in August 2007.
It is a full year since monthly passenger numbers exceeded 100,000, and figures for 2009 are between 20 and 30 percent down compared to the same months in the airline ‘boom’ of 2007. The newspaper predicts that it will have its worst annual figures since 2005 when it was operational for just over eight months after the maiden flight in April of that year.
Airport bosses say all regional airports have been affected by the recession and they are confident they can ride out the storm. A spokesman told the newspaper that Robin Hood was handling similar passenger numbers to Bournemouth and Exeter which have been established since after the war, as well as handling twice as much as their nearest geographical competitor, Humberside Airport.
