A former check-in worker has become an airline captain, the Daily Record reports. Jonathan McCoy completed the leap when he took command of a Ryanair flight from Prestwick Airport for the first time this week.
Mr McCoy started working with Ryanair at Prestwick Airport eight years ago. After a couple of years as a check-in agent, he moved to the aircraft despatch team. Whilst in that role worked overtime to pay for flying lessons and in 2005 he became a first officer.
A year later, the 27-year-old, of Troon, Ayrshire, was promoted to senior first officer. Then on Monday, he took control as aircraft commander of a return flight from Prestwick to Murcia in southern Spain.
Mark Rodwell, chief executive of Prestwick Airport, said: ‘This is a great success story. Jonathan deserves a lot of credit for reaching this stage of his career in such a short space of time and at a relatively young age.’ His wife Pauline is an air hostess with Ryanair.
