Prestwick Airport to have Olympics suspect flights role
18.12.11
Anti-terror police will maintain a constant presence at Prestwick Airport during the London Olympics, the Daily Record reports. Any aircraft thought to be under threat will be diverted to the airport, because its proximity to the sea means planes need not fly in over highly populated areas. The newspaper reports that added security will add hundreds of thousands of pounds to the £1.2million bill for hosting Olympic football matches in Glasgow.
Prestwick is already the designated airport for at-risk flights approaching the UK from the west, with Stansted expected to deal with flights from the east. But during the Olympics, the London airport's role will be suspended because anti-terror chiefs fear it would pose too much of a risk as it is so far inland. A second airport in the north of England will be delegated as an emergency airport in its place.
Strathclyde Police have said that it would not be feasible for anti-terror cops to scramble to reach Prestwick in the face of any threat. They say the only solution is to have the airport manned throughout the games.
