Second bomb hoax plane lands at Prestwick Airport
16.04.06
A plane had to make an emergency landing at Prestwick Airport last night after a bomb threat. The scare came after a passenger found a note saying a device had been planted on board. It was the second time in three days an aircraft had been diverted to the airport in a bomb scare.
Fighter jets last night escorted the Aer Arann flight, carrying 53 passengers and crew from Luton to Galway, on to the runway. They were evacuated into the terminal building where they were questioned by police while the plane was searched. A police spokeswoman later confirmed a note had been found claiming a bomb was on board.
It is the second time this week an Ireland-bound plane was forced to divert to Prestwick due to a security alert. On Wednesday, 167 Ryanair passengers, including 71 children, were flying from Paris to Dublin when they were told a note had been found claiming bomb had been planted on board. The flight was escorted to Prestwick by fighter jets after a passenger found the note in an inflight magazine.
A detailed search by bomb disposal experts found no trace of explosives. Prestwick Airport is used in such emergencies as it has a long and secluded runway.
