Drunk teenager wanders on to Prestwick Airport runway
13.07.09
A drunk teenager scaled a nine-foot fence then raced across the runway at Prestwick Airport - thinking it was a short cut to catch a cab, the Sunday Mail reports. Michael Elder, 17, thought he was taking a short cut to a taxi rank through the yard of a DIY store after a boozy party. He ended up causing a major security alert on the runway of Prestwick Airport.
His lawyer Tony Currie said: ‘Mr Elder hadn't a clue where he was and in fact he told me he thought he was in the yard of B&Q - which is about a mile and a half away. The fence is nine feet high with barbed wire so how he got over it is a mystery. He was caught on CCTV as he ran across the runway.'
Mr Elder admitted trespassing. Sheriff Colin Miller asked if he had been drinking before the mix-up. His lawyer said: ‘Very much so.’ Sheriff Miller branded his behaviour as ‘daft boy syndrome’. He deferred sentence on Elder for three months for good behaviour.
