Almost £175 million is generated by visitors arriving in Scotland through Prestwick Airport every year according to a new study on the economic impact of the Ayrshire gateway. The study also reveals that it accounts for nearly 3000 jobs across the country.
In the last decade the airport has enjoyed an unprecedented growth in passenger numbers, 2.4 million people pass through there every year - largely been driven by the boom in no-frills airlines, with Ryanair operating 27 routes from the hub.
As well as employing 480 staff directly, the study suggests that Prestwick Airport is responsible for 1700 jobs in Ayrshire and nearly 3000 jobs in Scotland, and generates more than £200 million every year for the scottish economy.
With a Masterplan for future development due to be released in the next few months, airport bosses say that they are confident that the only way is up.
