MSP blasts CIA Prestwick Airport stopovers
10.11.05
The CIA's use of Prestwick Airport as a stopover base for flights carrying terror suspects has been blasted by a Socialist MSP. Rosemary Byrne attacked top secret flights which take terror suspects to countries where they could face brutal torture.
Byrne said: 'This programme breaches every law on international human rights. The CIA transport terror suspects and their detention is concealed from the International committee of the Red Cross.'
'The use of Prestwick and Glasgow airports as stopover locations, as has been recently alleged, is of great concern. I have asked Cathy Jamieson to give an assurance that she will intervene in this moral issue.'
'Her reply that the UK Government's policy is that no person would be sent to a country where they may be tortured was the usual sort of soft soap we have been used to from the Executive. However, her lack of denial of the flights or assurance that they will be stopped is breathtaking in its arrogance. I will not let this matter rest.'
