Prestwick Airport for sale
10.10.11
New Zealand infrastructure investor Infratil plans to sell Prestwick Airport because of falling passenger numbers following flight cuts by Ryanair, the airport’s largest operator of scheduled passenger flights, according to Bloomberg and Business Week.
Marko Bogoievski, chief executive officer of Infratil, said in an interview: ‘Glasgow [Prestwick] is not performing. It is a difficult asset to see in the portfolio in the long term.’ Passenger numbers at Prestwick fell by 20 percent in September predominately because of Ryanair cutting flights at hub.
With BAA widely expected to put rival Glasgow Airport for sale this month after being ordered last week by the Competition Commission to sell a Scottish airport whilst it appeals the order to sell Stansted, there could be two airports in the region of sale. Perhaps Infratil is hoping bidders for Glasgow will see a value in Prestwick too.
