Amnesty calls for terror flights inquiry
09.05.06
Amnesty International has called for an independent public inquiry into the UK's involvement in CIA 'rendition' or 'terror' flights.
The Government has admitted a flight carrying a terror suspect landed at Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire, in June 1998 on the way to the US, but the human rights organisation claims to have unearthed new evidence about the movements of four CIA planes from the US agency's fleet of at least 26 aircraft.
Amnesty claims the planes took prisoners to illegal detention and torture and flights have landed and taken off at Scottish and other UK airports over the past five years, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and RAF Leuchars.
A Boeing 737 reportedly passed through Glasgow airport 19 times, while a Gulfstream V executive jet, the plane most often claimed to be linked with cases of rendition, has passed through Glasgow airport 20 times and Prestwick 36 times.
Recorded movements of a Gulfstream IV plane include one stop at Edinburgh, two at Glasgow, and ten at RAF Leuchars in Fife. Amnesty claims the flights are connected to the CIA through front companies.
