Prestwick Airport strikes freight deal with BA
07.10.06
Prestwick Airport has struck a major freight deal with British Airways World Cargo to operate scheduled freighter services through the Ayrshire hub. Under the agreement, Prestwick Airport will handle three new inbound and outbound flights per week, with Boeing 747 freighter aircraft stopping en route from Frankfurt to the US.
The aircraft will leave Prestwick for three of the world's busiest airports - Atlanta International, Chicago's O'Hare International and George Bush Intercontinental in Houston. The operation is scheduled to begin next Wednesday.
The airport declined to put a value on the deal - although it is expected to add around 15%, or 500 tonnes per year, to the roughly 30,000 tonnes the airport already handles each year.
Infratil, the New Zealand owner of Prestwick Airport, said the new services would increase the speed at which manufacturers in Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the north of England can get to the North American market.
The oil business out of Aberdeen, destined for Houston in particular, will make up a significant proportion of the BAWC's cargo, along with Rolls Royce aeronautical engineering equipment, an Infratil spokesman said.
