Olympic flight emergency landing at Prestwick Airport
06.11.09
A mid-air scare for a plane carrying members of Canada’s Winter Olympics committee, en route to Athens to collect the Olympic flame sparked a full-scale emergency at Prestwick Airport, the Ayrshire Post reports. Roads were closed and Troon lifeboat was scrambled as a Canadian Air Force plane radioed for help.
Their flight was forced to divert after a suspected fuel leak at high altitude. Rescue services threw a safety cordon around the airport, but after a safe landing, it was revealed that a faulty electrical system on the Airbus A310 was to blame. The flight, which had 49 people on board, was able to continue its journey after four hours on the ground at Prestwick undergoing checks.
