Scottish Secretary 'stopped US planes using Prestwick'
02.08.06
Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander intervened to prevent two American planes carrying weapons to Israel from using Prestwick Airport for refuelling, it has been claimed. Two US flights which were due to land at Prestwick at the weekend were diverted to RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, which is shared with the US air force.
Reports say the move followed protests by Mr Alexander, who feared the political fall-out from Scotland being used as a staging post for American bombs en route to arm Israel for its assault on Lebanon. He is said to have told Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett it would 'play very badly' in Scotland if the flights were allowed to stop at Prestwick.
