Prestwick Airport bosses issue warning over kettles
02.01.10
The Prestwick Airport bosses who banned toasters because they kept setting off fire alarms have issued a new warning over kettles, the Daily Record reports. The terminal building had to be evacuated four times in a month because staff kept burning their toast, triggering fire alarms. Now, workers have been warned to make sure they position kettles away from fire alarms in case the steam sets them off too.
The newspaper reports that airport bosses fear they will be fined by the fire service if they continue to make false alarm calls. In a letter issued to workers, they have warned: ‘We have had five fire alarm activations so far this year caused by burnt toast. Kettles generate steam when in use and recipients are to review where the kettles are situated to ensure they are not placed directly below a heat detector.
Prestwick Airport said a review of electrical appliances had been carried out after the false fire alarms. A spokesman told the newspaper: ‘When we banned the use of toasters in the terminal building, we instructed a review of the use and placement of all electrical appliances in kitchen areas. This was to ensure that triggering of heat and smoke sensors for non-alarm conditions would be eliminated.’
