Green arms flight protest to US consul today
01.08.06
The US Consulate General in Edinburgh faces a grilling over the involvement of Scottish airports in suspected weapons flights to Israel as she meets Green MSPs for talks at the Scottish Parliament today. The MSPs are to make the 'strongest possible protest' to the consul today over the use of Prestwick airport for 'bomb flights' to Israel, and will also raise concerns over rendition flights.
The meeting with the consul was arranged after the Green Party contacted the US ambassador in a visit to the parliament in March. Green MSPs will tell the consul that using Scotland as a stopover for munitions flights 'must stop' and that Scotland does not want to be associated with fuelling the conflict in the Middle East.
MSP Patrick Harvie said: 'We intend to raise the issue of the bomb flights to Israel in the strongest possible terms and we will make sure that Scottish voices are heard loud and clear. The supply of bombs to fuel conflict in the Middle East is unpardonable and abhorrent to any decent-minded person. We cannot allow Scotland to be seen in the eyes of the world as being party to the ongoing and worsening conflict.'
